Ryanair has shared an update for passengers following the introduction of its new boarding policy. The airline has moved to 100% digital boarding passes on all flights, with passengers receiving them in the Ryanair app when they check in online.

The airline says the change will help to reduce fares and make travel easier. Ryanair shared a social media post explaining why it has made the change. The video also explains how groups can access their passes and what to do if their phone battery dies.

In a YouTube video, a Ryanair team member said: "Over 90% of our passengers already use digital boarding passes. So for most of you, nothing changes. For the remaining small few, switching is simple and brings big benefits.

"Digital boarding passes lower airport costs, savings we then pass on to you in lower fares. That's right. It means lower fares for you. Plus, digital boarding passes may travel quicker, easier, and more environmentally friendly."

She confirmed that passengers need the airline's app to access their digital boarding pass. "You must check in online prior to arriving at the airport, either on the Ryanair app or at Ryanair.com. And if you check in on the website, you'll need the Ryanair app to access your digital boarding pass," she explained.

"Once checked in, your digital boarding pass will appear automatically in your Ryanair app, and it will be available even when you are offline. Simply present your digital boarding pass at security and at the boarding gate for your flight."

There was also advice for passengers travelling in groups. "For bookings made directly via the Ryanair groups department, the owner of the group booking must check in via the website or app first as a group. Then, using your booking reference, first name, last name, and date of birth, you can gain individual access to your own digital boarding pass."

If a passenger does not have a smartphone or their phone battery dies at the airport, Ryanair can offer a free boarding pass. The employee said: "Don't worry if you don't have a smartphone, or your battery dies, or you lose your device. As long as you've checked in online before arriving at the airport, you can receive a free of charge boarding pass at the airport check-in desk or at the boarding gate."

She added: "We will continue to email you check-in reminders in the days before your flight. But remember, if you arrive at the airport without checking in online, you will still be required to pay our airport check-in fee."
